An Ancient Buddhist Monument Brought Back to Light at Namal Uyana

On 23 November 2025, the Most Venerable Katugastota Uparatana Nayaka Thera joined members of the Maha Sangha, heritage officials and devotees at Jathika Namal Uyana for the formal opening of a preserved ancient Buddhist monument.

The structure is identified as a Sīmā Mālakaya, or Pohoya Geya—an Uposatha hall traditionally used by monks for formal acts of the Sangha. Long buried beneath the ground, it was brought to light through archaeological excavations conducted by Sri Lanka’s Central Cultural Fund. The surrounding remains are believed to belong to the early Anuradhapura period.

Its conservation was undertaken under the direction and supervision of the Central Cultural Fund and the Department of Archaeology, with financial support from Bhante and members of the Sri Lankan community in the United States. Following preservation, the monument was formally returned to the nation for the benefit of future generations.

Bhante addressed the gathering on the importance of protecting Theravada Buddhist heritage and preserving Sri Lanka’s archaeological legacy. His support helped ensure that this sacred place, once hidden beneath the earth, can once again bear witness to the country’s ancient monastic tradition.
