A Sacred Offering: MBV’s 2025 Katina Ceremony

On Sunday, 26 October 2025, Maryland Buddhist Vihara held its annual Katina Ceremony, bringing members of the Maha Sangha and the lay community together for one of the most significant observances in the Theravada Buddhist calendar.

The day included a solemn procession of monks beneath ceremonial umbrellas, followed by chanting and the preparation of the Katina robe. In a particularly meaningful part of the observance, devotees gathered around the dyeing vessel and worked together to stretch and dye the robe cloth while Bhante Uparatana and the assembled monks offered blessings.

Families, children and friends of the Vihara joined in the ceremony, reflecting the close partnership between the Sangha and lay devotees that lies at the heart of Katina. The offering expressed gratitude to the monks following the rains retreat and gave the community an opportunity to cultivate generosity, harmony and shared merit.
