Sri Lankan Road Named in Tribute to Bhante

In late October 2025, a road in the Polgahawela region of Kurunegala District, Sri Lanka, was officially named “Venerable Katugastota Sri Uparatana Nahimi Mawatha” in honour of the Most Venerable Katugastota Uparatana Nayaka Thera.

The road project was formally inaugurated with a cornerstone-laying ceremony attended by members of the Maha Sangha, public officials and members of the local community. The road runs beside the Rangalagedara temple and forms part of the Sri Lankan Government’s “Punarudayata Maga”, or “Path to Revival”, rural development programme.

Coordinated by the Polgahawela Pradeshiya Sabha and the North Western Provincial Administration, the project received an allocation of approximately six million Sri Lankan rupees.

For the Maryland Buddhist Vihara community, this tribute is a source of great joy and gratitude. It recognises Bhante’s lifelong dedication to the Buddha Sāsana, education and public service, as well as the enduring bonds he has maintained with the people and religious institutions of Sri Lanka while serving communities in the United States.

May this road stand as a lasting tribute to a life devoted to the Dhamma and to the welfare of others.
