The Light of Vesak at American University

On Thursday, 23 April 2026, the Most Venerable Katugastota Uparatana Nayaka Thera joined students, faculty and members of the wider American University community for a Vesak observance at the Kay Spiritual Life Center in Washington, D.C.

Bhante has served as Buddhist Chaplain at American University since 1989, offering spiritual guidance and helping foster understanding of Buddhist teachings within the university’s diverse interfaith community. During the observance, he shared reflections on the significance of Vesak and the Buddha’s enduring teachings of compassion, wisdom and peace.

The gathering included devotional offerings and the lighting of lamps, creating a quiet and respectful space for participants to reflect on the Birth, Enlightenment and Parinibbāna of the Buddha. It also gave students from different backgrounds an opportunity to encounter Buddhist practice and its message of goodwill towards all beings.

The occasion reflected Bhante’s longstanding service to American University and his commitment to making the Dhamma accessible within educational and interfaith settings. The Kay Spiritual Life Center supports religious observances and programmes that encourage understanding across the university community.
