MBV Celebrates the Sinhala and Tamil New Year 2026
On Sunday, 19 April 2026, the Maryland Buddhist Vihara community gathered to celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, welcoming a season of renewal with gratitude, fellowship and traditional observances.
Held under the guidance of the Most Venerable Katugastota Uparatana Nayaka Thera, the celebration brought together devotees, families and friends of all ages. The programme included the ceremonial lighting of the traditional oil lamp, the sharing of festive foods and opportunities for members of the community to honour Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage together.
The celebration was also attended by His Excellency Mahinda Samarasinghe, Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the United States, whose presence added to the significance of the occasion.
The gathering reflected the values associated with Avurudu: gratitude for the year that has passed, goodwill towards others and hope for a peaceful and prosperous year ahead. For Sri Lankan families living far from their homeland, it also offered a meaningful opportunity to share cherished customs with younger generations and the wider community.
May the New Year bring peace, good health and happiness to all.
🙏 Sadhu! Sadhu!! Sadhu!!!
