A New Centre for Buddhist Learning Takes Root in Onegama

On 21 June 2026, the Most Venerable Katugastota Uparatana Nayaka Thera joined members of the Maha Sangha and the local community for the cornerstone ceremony of a new international Buddhist centre at the Weheragodayaya sacred site in Onegama, Polonnaruwa.

The centre is to be named the Most Venerable Katugastota Uparatana Nayaka Thera International Buddhist Centre. With support from Uparatana Paramitha Padanama, it is envisioned as a place for Buddhist learning and practice, with future facilities dedicated to archaeological research and the study of Buddhist philosophy.

The surrounding sacred site is believed to contain the remains of an ancient monastic complex dating to the early Anuradhapura period. Archaeological evidence found in the area includes the remains of stupas, coins, beads, pottery, moonstones and stone pillars, reflecting its longstanding religious and historical importance.

Speaking at the ceremony, Bhante emphasised the value of sharing Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage more widely and developing thoughtful opportunities for Buddhist pilgrimage and cultural learning.

Uparatana Paramitha Padanama also contributed LKR 500,000 towards the centre’s construction.

May this worthy undertaking become a lasting place of learning, preservation and spiritual benefit for generations to come.
